It has been quite a while since I posted any news in this chapter. Doesn't mean that I have found every possible version. I just had other commitments meaning that my time passed on looking for new old models was quasi in-existing. I was recently able to acquire yet another 'Super Value Pack' by Matchbox featuring among others a 3" Volvo 760 scale model. The set features three models: Super GT BR 21 / 22 Alfa Carabo year: 1985 made in China Volvo 760 GLEMB year: 1986 made in China Ikarus bus 'City Line Tourist' MB67 year: 1985 scale: 1:140 made in China It's evident from the info's on the blister that this set has been offered in the UK. The Super GT was a proper model collection by Matchbox.

Super GT (or Super G.T.) is a range of miniature models, based on older 1970s castings in which interiors are no longer fitted, the windows are solid in color, opening features are cast shut and the bases are black plastic. Some models have white glow windows, these include the glowing race track "Streak Racing" models. The original name for the line was to be the "Budget Range" and models were designated with "BR". Model names are taken from the original name, but do not appear on the castings. The models were sold single or with launcher, and in gift sets. The line was introduced 1985 and ran trough 1988, between 1985 and 1987 the line was made in England, after in China. For 1988 all were recolored. In 1990 some models were reissued in neon colors and named "Neon Racers". These are denoted with "NR".

The all-new Volvo S40 sets the standard in its class with extremely high safety levels – both protective and preventive, and represents an evolution of the, "You think and then you build" theme that began with the award winning XC90 sport-utility vehicle.

It's all part of Volvo's Intelligent Vehicle Architecture (VIVA), a unique approach to building a car that integrates everything from its crashworthiness, to its dynamic styling and exciting driving characteristics. This is possible due to several interacting units, including a very stiff body, a new frontal structure and a world-first intelligent system for driver information.

The safety systems have been developed and tested in the Volvo Cars Safety Center, the most advanced facility of its kind in the world. About forty full-scale tests have been performed to help ensure that all the on-board components interact, not to mention an untold number of computer crash simulations.


VOLVO'S INTELLIGENT VEHICLE ARCHITECTURE (VIVA)

Crumple zones that employ different grades of steel

During the development of the all-new Volvo S40, the goal was to achieve class-leading safety utilizing a new way of thinking about how cars deform in the event of a collision.

“Our aim of building cars that are the safest in their class applies to all models, including the new Volvo S40,” says Ingrid Skogsmo, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre.

In a collision, the preconditions for efficient deformation are critical. Since the necessary deformation is absorbed within a limited total distance, the various materials’ properties must be exploited to the maximum so as to absorb as much of the incoming energy as possible.

“A tough challenge, but one that we approached in an entirely new way,” confirms Ingrid Skogsmo. "We call it Volvo's Intelligent Vehicle Architecture."

The frontal body structure of the all-new Volvo S40 is divided into several zones, each with a different task in the deformation process. The outer zones are responsible for most of the deformation. The closer the collision forces get to the passenger compartment, the less the materials used deform. The intention is that the passenger compartment should remain intact in most collisions.

In order to give each zone the relevant properties, different grades of steel are used in different areas. Four different steel grades are used. In addition to conventional bodywork steel, three different grades of high-strength steel are employed: High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and Ultra High Strength Steel.

What's also unique is that the all-new S40 went through a series of computer simulated frontal crash tests without the installed engine. The engines were then designed to fit within the empty space that remained after the simulated crash test. In a real collision the engine may be shunted reward 5.9 inches before contacting the bulkhead.

This zonal system enables the collision forces to be absorbed in a highly ingenious and effective manner:


Low-speed deformation zone

The front bumper incorporates an extremely rigid crossmember of boron steel. The attachments to the longitudinal members of the body are designed in the form of ‘crash boxes’, which absorb the forces generated by a low-speed collision without damage to the rest of the body structure. The crash boxes can be replaced easily at reasonable cost.


High-speed deformation zone

The straight sections of the side members are made of high strength steel, a very ductile grade of material, which is optimized for high-energy absorption. This zone accounts for most of the deformation in a collision.

In addition, Volvo has opted to include upper side cross-members since they provide essential protection if the vehicle should collide, for example, with a truck platform or a loading pier.


Back-up zone

The section of cross-member that turns outward toward the A-pillar is designed to act as a barrier protecting the cabin space and as a back-up against deformation. The design also helps minimize the possibility of the front wheel from penetrating the interior, the wheel instead helping to absorb the collision forces. This section is extremely rigid and is made of extra high-strength steel.


Three-way attachment

A rigid cross-member connects the A-pillars and lower side members. On each side they form an extremely rigid three-way attachment, which helps to preserve the passenger compartment.

The new front structure is one of Volvo’s many patented safety designs, and is an important part of Volvo's Intelligent Vehicle Architecture.


VIVA: Well-designed engines contribute to crash safety


Owing to efficient packaging, the engines in the all-new Volvo S40 are 7.8 inches slimmer than the 2.4- and 2.5-liter engines found in the S60 and V70. Since the engines are installed transversely, the reduced width creates greater space between the engine and passenger compartment. In a collision, the engine can be pushed up to 5.9 inches rearward before the crankshaft comes into contact with the cross-member near the bulkhead.

The steering column can be deformed up to 5.5 inches. When deformed, the steering column moves horizontally, to provide optimal airbag positioning.

In cars for the North American market the collapse function adapts to the use of the seat belt.
More solutions in common with other Volvo models:

• Collapsible pedals
• Dual-stage airbags
• Seat belt pretensioners for the front seats and rear outer seats
• Force limiter for the front seat belts
• Belt reminder for the front seats (for European markets also in the rear)
  

In versions destined for the North American market, the force limiters have been designed so that their effect is tailored to suit the seat’s passengers (due to the seat’s fore-aft position).


VIVA: Side Impact Protection System stiffens body

The all-new Volvo S40 is 1.9 inches wider than its predecessor. This creates added space for deformation in a collision. In other respects, the Volvo S40 has the same type of side impact protection as found on the S60 and S80, with SIPS (Side Impact Protection System), side-impact airbags and inflatable curtains. These curtains are designed to provide enhanced protection in rollover accidents, by deflating extra-slowly (approximately 3 seconds).

The side airbags are larger than in the previous S40 model to provide more effective protection at the hips and chest.
Several features contribute to the stiffer body and help prevent the side from deforming in a collision:

• The reinforced, transversely installed tubular beam between the A-pillars
• The diagonally installed beams of Ultra High Strength Steel in the doors
• The B-pillars, which have been significantly reinforced and are dimensioned to help provide enhanced protection

The new Volvo S40 is designed to help provide the best possible protection in a rear-end collision as well.

Volvo’s system for avoiding neck injuries – WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) – is one of the most effective on the market. In the event of a severe impact from the rear, the seat backrest and head restraint accompany the movements of the seat occupant’s body.

The seats and backrests are of a particularly robust design. They are designed to withstand high loads from items such as unsecured luggage.


Protection for other road users

The design of the all-new Volvo S40 has a front characterized by clean, smooth surfaces and rounded corners. The curves and panels are shaped to help reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists in the event of an accident. Furthermore, the front has an energy-absorbing structure ahead of the bumper so as to help reduce the risk of leg injuries.

The hood and front fenders are designed to absorb collision energy. This helps reduce the risk of head injuries. In addition, the compact new gasoline engines leave a generous 2.8 inches of free space between the cylinder head and hood.


Built for children too

Just like the rest of the Volvo range, the all-new Volvo S40 is developed with a keen focus on children. The body’s safety structure and interior safety systems are designed and dimensioned to help protect the youngest occupants too.

Both rear outer seats can be fitted with integrated child booster cushions for children above three years of age.

No child seats should be used in the front passenger seat of a vehicle equipped with a front passenger airbag. Volvo recommends that all children under the age of 12 be properly restrained in the rear seats at all times.


VIVA: PREVENTIVE SAFETY

Stable driving properties

The body of the all-new Volvo S40 is 68 percent stiffer than that of its predecessor, thanks to advanced body design. This torsional rigidity contributes to stable, predictable and consistent handling on the road. The car’s chassis design, with its broad track and long wheelbase, also has a positive effect on stability.

• The front track is 60.4 inches (2.5 inches wider than the previous S40 model).
• The rear track is 60.3 inches (2.2 inches wider)
• The wheelbase is 103.9 inches (3.0 inches longer)

The suspension is fully independent, with spring struts at the front and a multilink system at the rear. The rear suspension provides a certain degree of passive steering to counteract any tendency to skid.
The new Volvo S40 can be specified with:

• STC (Stability and Traction Control) anti-spin system.
• DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control), which corrects the car’s progress and poise if there is any sign of starting to skid.
  

In mid-2004 the Volvo S40 T5 will be available with all-wheel drive. Volvo’s electronically controlled AWD system distributes the torque automatically to match the road and driving style, providing stable, consistent driving characteristics.


Excellent braking

The new Volvo S40 has extremely powerful ABS brakes – with electronic brake-force distribuion to the rear wheels and automatic panic-braking assistance – EBA (Emergency Brake Assistance). The front wheels feature ventilated discs. The disc size is adapted to engine power (diameter up to 16.5 inches).


Projector-type headlamps

The headlamps feature projector-type low beams. The concentrated beam of light is surrounded by a “halo” which helps oncoming drivers judge the distance to the car.


Bi-Xenon gas discharge lamps (GDL) for high and low beam are available as an option.

Additional side-mounted turn indicators in the door mirrors and integrated side-marker lights in the front and rear lamps make the Volvo S40 easy to see from the side too.


Ergonomic driver’s environment

An ergonomically designed seating position with all the instruments and controls in just the right position makes for safer progress. In this respect, the Volvo S40 continues a renowned Volvo tradition. It has a comfortable and conveniently operated driver’s seat, an adjustable steering wheel and a logically laid out instrument panel.

Steering wheel-mounted controls for the audio system, cruise control and navigation system add further to driving safety.


Intelligent Driver Information System

The all-new Volvo S40 introduces IDIS – the Intelligent Driver Information System.

IDIS is a feature influenced by fighter aircraft technology. The system helps the driver avoid being distracted while driving.

When the traffic requires the driver’s full attention and concentration, for example when overtaking or braking, signals from the integrated GSM telephone (not available in the U.S.) and certain peripheral information are delayed until the situation is calmer. Drivers should, however, always focus their full attention and concentration whenever they are behind the wheel.

The IDIS function continuously registers the driver’s activity by monitoring steering wheel movements, the accelerator pedal, turn signal function, braking and so on. This information is processed and at a given activity level, information that is not essential to safety is held back.

IDIS is standard in all versions of the all-new Volvo S40; irrespective of whether or not the car is fitted with an integrated phone (U.S. cars will not be offered with the integrated phone).

IDIS is factory-prepared for forthcoming on-board systems for information and communication. The more such functions the car has, the greater the benefit of IDIS.


SECURITY

Volvo’s holistic view of safety encompasses not just Protective and Preventive safety, but also Personal Security. The all-new Volvo S40 is designed to provide effective protection for the car’s occupants and their property, both while on the move and when the car is parked.

The level of theft protection is very high, as a result of close co-operation with Thatcham, the world-leading automotive research and technology centre. The all-new Volvo S40 is equipped with a number of protective functions, such as:

• Electronic immobilizer
• Electronic anti-theft “marking”
• Uniquely identified control modules
• Audio system as an integral part of the on-board electrical system
  

The all-new Volvo S40 can also be equipped with laminated door windows. Laminated glass is extremely difficult to smash and provides enhanced protection against break-ins.

ALL-NEW VOLVO S40 SEES STARS AS IT ACES NHTSA SIDE IMPACT CRASH TEST; SALES UP OVER 29 PERCENT MONTH-TO-DATE

Irvine, CA (July 27, 2004) – The crunch of steel and shattering glass can be one of the most horrific memories of an automobile accident. Unless, of course, the accident isn't really an accident; but instead a highly structured test being conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That was exactly the case recently when NHTSA completed its side impact protection test of the all-new Volvo S40 sport sedan.

The results: 5 stars for the driver; 5 stars for the passenger. The highest rating the U.S. Government organization grants to passenger vehicles.

"With these latest crash test results, and the fact that sales of the all-new S40 are up 29.2 percent from last year, we are proving that safety and style can go hand-in-hand!" commented Vic Doolan, President and CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, LLC. "The new S40 is doing exactly as we intended. It's bringing new, younger buyers, into our dealerships, but it's doing so in the Volvo way, with passenger safety as our number-one concern." The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the new Volvo S40 a "Good, Best Pick" in its 40-mph offset frontal collision test and Euro-NCAP, the organizing body of collision protection testing in Europe also rated the S40 with 5 stars, it's highest rating.

The sales success of Volvo's newest sport sedan can most likely be attributed to its appealing pricing. The new 2005 S40 carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $23,945 for the normally aspirated front-wheel-drive 2.4i, and $26,745 for the front-wheel-drive turbocharged T5. On sale now, the 168-horsepower 2.4i is available with a 5-speed "Geartronic" automatic transmission while the 218-horsepower T5 is offered with a choice of either a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission or the automatic gearbox and, new for 2005, electronically controlled all-wheel drive.

Zee Toys / Zylmex

Also called Zylmex and made by Zyll Enterprises, these are usually three inch diecast vehicles with some larger plastic vehicles.

Zyll Enterprise Ltd. went out of business in March 1996 and sold their dies and trademarks to a firm in Hong Kong in 1997. Intex was the only importer of Zee Toys to the US until 1993, thereafter Motormax sold some some models.  Edocar and Sears produced a set of Pacesetters called "Roadmates".
Zee Toys, Inc. offered Zylmex products in the United States until the early 1990s. Both Zylmex and Zee Toys are synonymous. Zee Toys appears to be the name used by the North American offices for this firm. Zylmex is a registered trade-mark of Zyll Enterprises, which appears to be the Hong Kong manufacturer. Zee Toys began in the late 1960s and was established in Los Angeles.
By the mid-1970s, the company was based in Gardena, California and a few years later, relocated to Long Beach, California. The early models issued were equipped with solid disk tires reminiscent of the Schuco "Modell" series. These were sometimes available in a picturebox.
Miniatures were issued in different series which were made evident by a number indicated on each baseplate.A letter was used as a prefix for model numbers including "D", "P", and "T". Various cars in the late 1960s by famous designers like Barris, Tom Daniel, etc. were identified with the Zylmex brand to compete with Hot Wheels. The early "Dyna-Mites" Fl racers, that are "Penny" (Polistil) knock-offs, were offered under the names "Texaco Scorchers", "Flitzer", "Diecast Metal Cars", etc.
There were also plastic commercial trucks that incorporated the "Zee" name on the front grill. It appears these were the first examples to use this name. Many castings eventually issued had the Zee Toys logo on the baseplate.
During the 1970s, Zee Toys issued models titled "Windracers", "Mini Macks", "The Competitors", "Rough Riders", "Super Vans", "Dynawheels", "Highway Patrol", and "M.A.S.H.". "Fast Wheel" was an assortment of twelve simple castings. The package identifies Zylmex and manufacturing by Zyll Enterprises. The castings have no window glazing or interiors. The brackets for the axles connect to the underside of the roof. Playart also issued this identical set.
During this same time period, "Krazee Wheels" as stated on the baseplate, sported very large exaggerated wheels. In 1971, these had rubber tires and later became plastic. The blistercard states, "Designed by George Barris of Hollywood". They were later called "Crazy Wheels" and dropped the Barris name.
In about 1981, Intex Recreation Corporation, also of Long Beach, became the distributor of Zee Toys in the United States. At that time the Intex name was added on the packaging. In the 1980s, they continued with "Dynawheels", "Victory Circle", "Wild Cars", and "Pacesetters". Pullback cars were included in a separate series in the 1980s. "Gas Blasters" were cars accompanied with a key. Canadian and European markets offered "Dart Wheels" in lieu of "Dynawheels". They were sold in blistercard and windowbox packages. Also during the 1980s another brand of diecast named MC Toy were issued as "Dynawheels" and "Pacesetters" along with Zee Toys/Zylmex counterparts under the Intex umbrella. These were offered in singles as well as a 50 car set. MC Toy castings were also available with light and sound functions and color changers. Eventually, the relationship between Intex and MC Toy ended. The MC Toy castings became known as Maisto. Zee Toys/Zylmex castings were also offered as Sears "Road Mates" and Toys 'R' Us "Fast Lane". P.K. Douglass of Canada offered "Dart Wheels", the name used for marketing in Europe as well. In the early 1990s, Zyll Enterprises Ltd. of Hong Kong replaced Intex as the American distributor and continued to market and produce Zylmex/Zee Toys. Their North American offices were located to Santa Ana, California.
In about 1995, Red Box Toy Factory Ltd. became the owner of Zylmex and subsequently continued to offer the various series from offices in Ontario, California. Two of the assorted series were the military themed "Action-Masters" and "Dyna-Trucks Trailer Set". The former included an assortment of HO scale tanks. Later, Red Box introduced a new name for diecast. Motor Max became the brand name and utilized some of the old Zylmex castings in addition to adding many new models.

Volvo look to regain market share without govt orders

Until 2005, Volvo was portrayed here as a legitimate representation of high-ranking government officials as well as of persons of a certain social status.

Things changed for Volvo about three years ago, when the government started to shift to relatively cheaper cars, dominated by Toyota's Camry, as official government vehicles.

Armed with a new positioning strategy, the brand hopes to regain its position and boost this year's sales by almost 200 percent to 170 units from 60 units last year.

"The luxurious Volvo S80 will be our sales' backbone this year," said Paulus B. Suranto, CEO of PT Indobuana Autoraya -- Volvo's official distributor -- at the official launch of the car in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The company, Paulus said, was targeting to sell 120 units of the Volvo S80 and 50 units divided between the S60 sedan and the sport-utility vehicle XC90.

In 2005, Volvo sold 143 cars in Indonesia. That number decreased in 2006 to 69 cars. In 2007, the number dropped again to 60 cars, or only 0.01 percent of the 433,323 total cars sold in Indonesia last year.

Jusak Kertowidjojo, the CEO of Indobuana's parent company, Indomobil Group, acknowledged that being the government's car of choice for years had helped to boost Volvo's image as a mark of class.

Prior to the shift to the Toyota Camry in 2005, Volvos were used by almost all high-level officials, from heads of state departments to members of the House of Representatives and high-ranking military officers.

Instinctively, other prominent segments of the community, like private company directors, were influenced to drive a Volvo.

However, Jusak denied the government's decision to abandon Volvo had anything to do with Volvo's declining share of the Indonesian market.

"Volvo's biggest costumer segments are in individual and company markets, not the government. Thus, the government's decision did not have a significant impact on our sales," he said during the launch of the new Volvo S80 on Wednesday.

Paulus said the reason for Volvo's sales decline was mainly due to the decision by Volvo's headquarters in Sweden not to make Indonesia one of its main markets.

"Volvo is still focusing its sales in the United States and Europe, where the demand is very high. Thus, Volvo does not have a large supply to be sold in Indonesia," Paulus said.

The Volvo S80 type, with a 2500cc engine, can be ordered for an on-the-road price of Rp 750 million (US$82,000), while the 3200cc variant costs Rp 1.2 billion. (uwi)

In his speech, Gunadi Shinduwinata as President Director of PT. Indomobil Sukses International Tbk. said, "Since its launch at the Geneva Motor Show event until today, The All New Volvo S80's got a fairly positive response from the community. It is evident from the sales volume reached 70 thousand units worldwide."

Meanwhile, Paul B. Suranto, CEO of PT. Ibar, revealed that, "Of the total sales of Volvo's target for the year 2008 to reach 180 units, is expected to The All New Volvo S80 able to dominate sales to 120 units until the end of this year."

Overall, both exterior and interior plus a technology that was carried from the second generation S80 is very different from the previous model. The All New Volvo S80 has the same dimensions of length 4850 mm, but wider 27 mm and 34 mm higher than its predecessor. Showing the exterior design and dynamic impression that is reflected from the body lines are smooth. Sporting and powerful aura was portrayed through a combination of lighting design front grille and wider high-Bonet combined with the shape of the curve "V". Viewed from the rear, Volvo's distinctive stop lamp is made more streamlined to give the impression that the sporting but still look soft. Seen the All-New S80 has left the form of 'kotak' her.

Turning to the interior, Scandinavian-style design All New S80 offers an aura of luxury and comfort. Colors and patterns are designed with accents "quarts", the name given specifically for Volvo Cars of this model. Quarts itself is a combination of new interior of Anthracite black as the color of the interior and the seats covered in leather with brown color, as well as the door.
