NEW OLD MODELS FOUND |
The tag says it all. It's all about older models which I have discovered only recently. |
Amazon65, a long-time Volvo collector from the Netherlands informed me about this small Volvo PV544 scale model. It is a plastic scale model that the American company MPC (Multiple Products Company) produced back in 1961. The scale is close to 1:87 but I have not been able to verify this information. The model has been produced in the following four colours : red, green, blue and yellow. But it seems that you can find models in various shades of each colour. Volvo PV544 in red by MPC :

Quote from an article by Dave B. Reeves : A Brief History: A few brief notes that may prove helpful to you in collecting these cars: They were made by the Multiple Products Company (MPC) in New York City between approximately 1954 and 1970. They were frequently sold in bags of 40 or 100, for either 49 or 99 cents, and were originally called "Cars of All Nations". In later years they also appeared in cellophane boxes, and renamed such things as “Detroit in Miniature” and other names. Usually sold in 5 & 10 stores such as Woolworth’s, they also appeared in the toy aisles of many drug stores and grocery stores. Some of you may even be old enough to remember when they were sold through advertisements in the back pages of comic books ... cars sold this way came in the mail in a square box (I have three sets in their original shipping boxes, and a copy of the ad itself, in my own collection). Note that the MPC Company that produced them has no relation to the MPC Company that later produced plastic model kits. The little cars appear to have disappeared from stores in the early 1970’s although occasionally a complete bagged set still turns up (I have six or seven different sets in unopened bags). ........ A collector from Switzerland told me about this Volvo P1900. It is a 1:43 scale model made of white metal and produced by Renko. Renko has its origins in Sweden. But I have no idea who is behind that name. Renko already did an open version of this car a few years ago. They produced an unauthorized but slightly modified copy of the Rob Eddie model. It had a rear numberplate, chromed trim on the sides, different headlamps, different rims and tires. This is however a closed version and this one seems to be a copy of a former R&M model. If you inspect the pictures of both models you will see that they are identical with the exception of the name on the bottom-plate. I'm however no sure how R&M produced their model. My guess is that they scaled down a Volvo P1900 that has been produced in Japan by K.S.Asahi as a 1:24 tinplate model. 1:43 Volvo P1900 with closed top made by Renko

1:24 Volvo P1900 with closed top made by K.S. Asahi I am curious to find out how many versions Majorette released from the Volvo 760. Finding the different colors was an easy task. But it is more difficult to get an overview of every double-pack and every packaging version that has been released.
The last one that turned up is a green Volvo 760 packed in a blister showing an advertisement for the WWF ( World Wildlife Fund ). The blister calls to donate money in order to protect endangered animals. You were also able to win several prizes. The first prize was a trip to Florida. This release was only offered in France and issued in collaboration with WWW France. The deadline for the game was September 1988 so I suppose this set has only been offered that year. I would be very pleased if you could contact me if you are aware of other versions. This Volvo C30 is a Code 2 model made for Disney by Matchbox. The set was offered as Matchbox Mickey Mouse Clubhouse 5-pack back in 2011. On the left side of the white car there’s a decal ‘Best Friend’ and a picture of Minnie Mouse. On the right side of the car there’s a decal ‘Look at that sparkle’. The interior and base of the model are violet. Product number is MB711 and the scale of the model is 1:61. The car has been made in Thailand. The 5-car Disney gift set includes furthermore :
It seems that I have put an eye on Majorette models these days. The special thing about these two cars are the markings on top of the blisters : SWB - SÜDWESTBANK. These models have certainly been give-aways from that German bank. This is quite an unusual choice for a bank coming from Stuttgart ( Baden-Wurttemberg) since Mercedes Benz and Porsche have their headquarters not far away. You can also notice on the photos that both scale models have different types of wheels.
This set made around 1967-1968 in Hong Kong by Speedking features two Volvo Amazon slotcars. Both 4-door Volvo Amazon models are in 1:48 scale. I presume that due to the language on the box this set has only been sold in the Scandinavian countries. And it seems that this set is quite a rare one. This set has been sold on 2012-02-21 for 1028 SEK ( 174 € / 154 $ ) on tradera.com Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any infos about his set. Source & copyright : tradera seller Nidob64
I have once again found a set by Majorette featuring a Volvo XC90. This is a 3-car Police set containing the following cars :
All three cars are painted silver metallic and have a large blue stripe on the sides and a blue hood. The Ford and the Porsche have large sized red-light bars on the roof. The Volvo XC90 has a smaller one that has unfortunately been placed on top of the closed glass sunroof. It seems that this set has been released a year ago.
