NEW OLD MODELS FOUND |
The tag says it all. It's all about older models which I have discovered only recently. |
The Swiss home improvement center Coop Bau+Hobby offered last autumn a model of a Volvo Amazon. The first idea behind this Volvo Amazon is being a deco object rather than a precise scale model. But a few Volvo enthusiasts in Switzerland thought that it might fit well into their Volvo scale model collection. The model is made out of tinplate and the overall proportions reflect pretty well the real thing. The car features even an interior with seats, a rudimentary detailed dashboard as well as a steering wheel. The wheels don't turn. The dimensions of the model are : l= 27,5cm / w=10cm / h=9,5cm. This means that this Volvo Amazon is pretty close to 1:16. The model was sold between 20 and 25 CHF. This would make today between 18.5 and 23 EUR or 20.6 and 25.7 USD. I can't tell you where or who made this model. There are no marks or inscriptions on the model. Similar deco cars have been and are still being made in Africa as well as Malaysia.

This Volvo Amazon by Minichamps was apparently given to Volvo salesmen in Germany who attempted a training meeting for Volvo car insurances. Only 750 units of this 1:43 scale model were produced and labeled for the event. The color is graphite metallic combined with a red interior. This 4-door Amazon was also released as a regular model in 2009 by Minichamps under item number 430171061.
This is a charming and also quite rare set. The Volvo Amazon and the caravan have been produced in Hong Kong by a company called Lucky Toys and marketed under the name Laurie Toys. Both models are made of plastic and their scale is 1:25. This set called 'Continental Tourer' does not show up very often. And it is even rarer to find it with a complete and undamaged cardboard box which features also an attractive colorful design.
This near mint set is offered at the moment on eBay.co.uk under auction number 120974729044.
This Volvo Amazon scale model has been produced in Japan by the company AHI. The model consist of a diecast body with a tinplate bottom-plate riveted to it. The car has free rolling axles with tires made of rubber. The scale model comes mounted on a black plastic base with a clear plastic cover. The car is fixed with a ribbon to the base. I have seen the car so far only in this orange livery. An excellent overview of other models by AHI offers this webpage : www.87thscale.info/ahi.htm
I have found the Volvo Amazon by Combiplay in one more color which is light blue. This makes now a total of seven different paint variations plus some promotional versions. The toy version for this Volvo Amazon model has been designed by Björn Älskog. This designer who's specialized in toys is also working for companies such as Playsam, Viking Toys, Haags, Brio and Aqua Play.
This set made around 1967-1968 in Hong Kong by Speedking features two Volvo Amazon slotcars. Both 4-door Volvo Amazon models are in 1:48 scale. I presume that due to the language on the box this set has only been sold in the Scandinavian countries. And it seems that this set is quite a rare one. This set has been sold on 2012-02-21 for 1028 SEK ( 174 € / 154 $ ) on tradera.com Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any infos about his set. Source & copyright : tradera seller Nidob64
This model is already listed in the database which means that it is not the first time that I have seen one like this. But what does this make more special is the the fact that the Polis version was only sold in Sweden. And this one comes even with the original box which is a indeed a rare occasion to get one of these tinplate models. But don't expect it to be a bargain. Photos used with permission.
I have only recently added a Volvo Amazon by Lucky Toys on this page. But here we are back with a color variation that I never saw before. This one is cream white and comes with two antennas and a roof rack. This model is missing unfortunately one antenna and the front bumper.
I knew that Lucky Toys produced several plastic Volvo Amazon 4-door models. These included versions with :
But it is the first time that I found a normal version. This battery operated model however comes with two figures that the other versions don't have. Lucky Toys was a Hong Kong based company. Photos used with permission. Courtesy of Irene & Kurt Karlsson
