Volvo ÖV4 Jakob by Stahlberg

I'm pretty sure that you're wondering yourself why I'm presenting the Volvo ÖV4 Jakob by the Finish company Stahlberg here. Well two Volvo fans from the Netherlands have recently discovered a new version of this well known scale model made out of plastic. The lightly inclined windshield stands out on this newly discovered version. It may be a model from the very first run. All the remaining versions who were released had always a vertical windshield.

And here is yet another version (left model in the photo on your ride) which features a slightly different blue plastic body. And as you can see the seats are also a different color. They are way more orange as both versions on the right side. The proud owner has told me also that the plastic of the body is harder as the two other ones.

  • Do you have also a model like this?
  • Can you tell us anything about these newly discovered versions?
Don't hesitate to contact me if you may have answered yes to at least one of the above questions. Thanks a lot in advance.

Curb weight: 1,170 kg (2,579 lb)

Volvo ÖV 4 is the first car built by Volvo. The designation ÖV 4 stands for "Öppen Vagn 4 cylindrar" in Swedish, which means Open Carriage 4 cylinders. The model ÖV 4 was often referred to as "Jakob" but that was just a name for one of the 10 pre-series ÖV 4 that was ready on July 25 Jakob's name-day. All 10 prototypes were assembled in Stockholm at the company AB Galco, Hälsingegatan 41 where Gustav Larson worked at that time. Only one of the 10 pre-series cars manufactured during 1926 was saved for posterity and is housed at the Volvo Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The engine was designed by Gustav Larson and its main chassis components by Jan G. Smith, a designer who had worked many years in the American automobile industry and returned to Sweden in 1924. Many of Jan G. Smith's original drawings for the ÖV4 and other technical papers that he collected in America are saved in the archive of the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.

When the first series produced ÖV4 was about to drive out of the factory and engineer Eric Carlberg put it into first gear, the car went backwards, where the car was actually in reverse gear. The explanation was that the differential gear in the rear axle had been fitted incorrectly. This mistake delayed the introduction by one day and the official introduction day for the ÖV4 was then adjusted to the April 14, 1927, the day AB Volvo officially says the automobile company Volvo was "born"— this is from a marketing point of view. The company as an automobile company was born as a subsidiary company to SKF August 10, 1926. The cabriolet was not very successful in the Swedish climate; the covered version, PV 4, was introduced in the end of 1928. Between 1927 and 1929 a total of 996 cars were manufactured.

Because of your small report about the Jakob model with the inclined front window I looked more interested to offers of these models on the markets. At last weekend I visited the Bremen Classic Motorshow and could buy there such a model. Before I never realised that there is a difference to the normal, well known model, and now I have also one. The model I bought is very dusty, so that may be an indication that it is very old and not a new production. The seller has no additional informations to it. I will try to find some information about Stahlberg or Nyrhinnen in the internet or from swedish collectors.
Best regards from a Volvo model collector since 30 years.

Hej Notker,
I'm always pleased if I can with a new post regarding older models.
Well you know dust is in my eyes not the most striking argument for defining if a model is old or older as a similar one. This depends very much on the condition a scale model is stocked.
Enjoy your new model and we all would be very very pleased if you should be able to find out more.
