Volvo 480 Turbo USA by Editions Atlas

The number thirty-four in the Volvo Collection by Editions Atlas is the Volvo 480 Turbo. Volvo had the intention to offer the 480 on the US-market but the car never made it across the Atlantic ocean. One reason were unfavourable currency exchange rates back in the second half of the 1980's.

I'm convinced that some of you are frustrated to see a second Volvo 480 appearing in the Volvo Collection by Editions Atlas. Editions Atlas choose to produce a second livery of the 480 since they decided twice to enlarge the collection. The 2-3 models offered in two different colors and/or decorations were needed to fill the gap which is needed to design and produce new models. The other possibility would have been a larger break between two releases.

The good news is that this is finally the last Volvo of this collection which is painted red.

I'm not convinced by the interest of this model who has never crossed the Atlantic ... Not really visible difference from the models released in Europe ...

I totally agree with Franck.
This is useless. I do not understand why they did not do this the Caprio model...
The same models already begins to be too much like two models of PV445, 440, P1800ES and now 480.
For example, they could have done 460 from 440 mold and/or PV445 Cabrio or Pick-up from the Duett mold pretty easily.
No offense.

I'm sure nobody will see any doubles.

The 480 convertible would have been great but this isn't possible without doing a new mold. They would destroy the original mold of the 480 if they would have modified it to get one for the convertible.

I'm pretty sure that we won't see any doubles from now on.
I was able to see some of the upcoming models and you won't get disappointed. There will be a few models which have never been offered before as 1:43 scale model.

Dear all,

I understand your comments.

Just to explain, a new body, even if it's based on an existing one, take the same time to develop as a brand new mould.
What's great in this case, it's that we could change some parts as well, Per C. explain them well further.
As such parts are in the main mould it's quite complicated also to make those changes, but we thought it was important to make a real new model.

But some convertibles based on existing coupé are also in preparation :-)

It is fine by me. Like Michelle said, we are very lucky that Atlas decided to enlarge the whole collection so if releasing 'double' models to keep the collection going then I am all for it. I also feel that the difference between the 480ES and this one is significant enough to dignify with a release. A convertible would have been nice but then again, I already own a Doorkey 480 convertible so... :-)
Keep up the good work Atlas!!

I agree with Bjorn. I think the decision to extend the collection to 60 item allow for a few "near doubles", although I had preferred that maybe some of them were other types. For instance, the "Prins Carl Gustaf P1800" feels just like it is another colour and no more.
The increase to 60 models is something we have to thank the dynamic "Mr. Atlas" for, he seems to have a genuine interest in cars. I believe he will have some very interesting models for those who stay with the collection.
Many other producers re-introduce their models in new colours and not changing anything else, so in that respect I think Editions Atlas is better than most.

Indeed. And although it is close, with this one it is not just a repaint. They took the effort to change the rear bumper to allow for the smaller number plate for example.

To be exact, the changes are
- different headlight combo (larger orange section on the USA car)
- different rear lights (seem to have a blacker tint on the USA one)
- different rear bumber (allowing for high & narrow number plate on the USA one)
- different hub caps ("spoked" on the USA one)
and of course the interior colour only for the US.
Also the colour of the third rear stop light is now red, I guess it was an error to make it white on the standard version....
So, one could not say it is just the same car in different colour!

Thank you Per for sharing with us this excellent list showing the differences between the two Volvo 480 models.

The fact that I don't approves the choice of this model absolutely doesn't mean that I disparage the collection. However, the detail of the miniature set by PerC sensiblise me more. Thank you Perc ;-) . Further evidence that the 480 definitely leaves no one indifferent.
